Who is involved?

Matthijs de Ligt played alongside Virgil van Dijk in the UEFA Nations League final against Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo played in that match too and oversaw his side beat the Dutch 1-0. After the final whistle, it is said that the Juventus man had asked de Ligt to join the Serie A club.

The defender is currently only 19, but he has already captained Ajax and guided them to victories against Real Madrid and the Old Lady.

What has happened?

Following his great performance in the European competition, there has been plenty of rumours surrounding his future. Fellow Ajax player, Frenkie de Jong, has already signed a deal to join Barcelona. De Jong has reportedly tried to persuade his former team-mate to join the La Liga champions.

Meanwhile for Juventus, they lifted the Serie A title once again but missed out on European glory despite bringing in Ronaldo. The Turin-based club has yet to announce a new manager following Massimiliano Allegri’s departure.

After hearing Ronaldo’s words, De Ligt admitted that he was a little shocked. Perhaps he did not envision his opponent speaking to him on such a matter after a final.

What might happen?

De Ligt has some time to consider his future. His contract with Ajax lasts until 2021. Besides Barcelona and Juventus keeping an eye on him, Manchester United and Liverpool are reported to be keen on signing him too. Time will tell whether he stays or decides to challenge himself.
