Manchester City Transfer News: Gary Neville praises Harry Maguire

Who is involved?

Manchester United and Manchester City are both after Harry Maguire in this summer transfer window. City are eager to find a replacement for Vincent Kompany and they have identified the Leicester City defender to be that candidate. Meanwhile, United are keen to boost their defence after a poor season saw them finish 6th in the Premier League table.

However, Maguire will not come cheap as the Foxes are unwilling to let go of their star man. Former United legend, Gary Neville, has since spoken up on the England international’s skills and capabilities.

What has happened?

Maguire is one of the most highly-rated centre-backs in the Premier League. Following his superb performance for England in World Cup 2018, his value in the market has drastically increased. It is said that Leicester City are asking for at least £90 million for their defender.

City are yet to welcome any new signings but the Red Devils have bought Daniel James from Swansea City.

Speaking in late May, Maguire said that he wanted to focus on playing for the England team. At that point of time, the Three Lions were preparing for their UEFA Nations League competition. He said,

“When I’m away with England, I don’t think about anything to do with club football.”

“As soon as I wear this badge, it’s really important to focus on England and nothing else. I’m fully focused on the two games coming up and that’s where my head is at the moment.”

What might happen?

Both clubs have not given up on the defender. Neville mentioned that Maguire has the capabilities of replacing Kompany. He explained,

“If you think of the attributes of centre-backs, he has them in abundance. Leicester fans won’t thank me for this, but they’re going to be under real pressure to keep him this summer.”

“We talk about John Stones being good on the ball, I actually think Maguire is the equal of him on the ball. “

“A big statement, maybe, as Stones is seen as the composed, ball-playing centre-back, but I think Maguire is just as good on the ball.”

There is no doubt that the 26-year-old is highly valued and might leave the Foxes this summer.
